A 21-year-old BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) student at Sharda University was found dead by suicide in her hostel room on Thursday evening. The student, identified as Jyoti Jhangra from Gurugram, reportedly left behind a note blaming two faculty members for persistent mental harassment and humiliation.

The handwritten note, recovered by the police, specifically named two professors, Mahinder Singh Chauhan, and Shayri Vashisht, and accused them of mentally torturing her. “They humiliated me and made my life unbearable. I can’t live like this anymore,” the note read, according to officials familiar with the investigation.

According to Jyoti’s classmates, the emotional turmoil began when she was accused of forging a faculty member’s signature on a project file. She was allegedly reprimanded and ridiculed in front of other students, which caused her severe distress.

Acting on a complaint filed by the student’s father, the Uttar Pradesh Police registered an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including abetment to suicide, criminal intimidation, and insulting the modesty of a woman. The two named professors were suspended and later taken into custody.

Additional faculty members, including the head of department and dean, have also been mentioned in the complaint. Authorities have begun questioning other staff and students while seizing Jyoti’s mobile phone and laptop for forensic analysis. CCTV footage from the hostel premises is also being examined.

Sharda University has established an internal inquiry committee to investigate the matter independently and has suspended all BDS examinations until further notice. In a statement, the university administration expressed condolences to the family and said it would fully cooperate with the police investigation.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of this case, along with a similar incident involving an IIT student, and has asked authorities to submit detailed reports by July 28. The Court criticized the delay in filing FIRs and emphasized the need for urgent intervention in such cases.
