CBI Arrests Customs Superintendent in ₹10.2 Lakh Bribery Case at Mumbai Cargo Terminal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Krishna Kumar, a superintendent of customs posted at Sahar Air Cargo in Mumbai, for allegedly accepting a ₹10.2 lakh bribe to facilitate the clearance of imported cargo. The arrest follows a complaint filed by a Customs House Agent (CHA) alleging extortion and harassment by the official.

According to the CBI, Kumar demanded bribes at a rate of ₹10 per kilogram of imported cargo for himself and other senior customs officers. The complainant reported that Kumar had sought ₹6 lakh for consignments previously cleared, which included ₹5.8 lakh for senior officials and ₹20,000 for himself, in addition to ₹10 lakh for clearing a current shipment.

Between July 25 and August 1, the CBI conducted verification of the allegations in the presence of independent witnesses. Recorded phone calls and documentary evidence reportedly confirmed Kumar’s demands. The agency then set up a trap operation. On August 2, Kumar was caught accepting the bribe at his residence in Kharghar.

CBI officials said Kumar attempted to evade arrest by throwing away the money bag and driving recklessly inside the housing colony. He was detained after a brief chase, and the bribe money was recovered.

The case also names unidentified public servants and private individuals suspected of being part of a broader bribery network within the customs clearance process. Investigators are probing possible involvement of other officials, including those from the R&I wing.

Kumar has been remanded in police custody until August 6. The CBI has indicated that more arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.
