The United States has informed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that President Donald Trump expects Russia and Ukraine to reach a peace agreement by August 8. The message, delivered by a top American diplomat, highlights Washington’s renewed efforts to bring an end to the war that has plagued Ukraine since 2022.

During a session with the 15-member council on Thursday, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. John Kelley stated, “Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear that this must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace.” Although Kelley did not detail what those measures might include, the remarks indicated the administration’s readiness to take further action should talks stall.

The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, has resulted in widespread destruction, heavy casualties, and far-reaching economic consequences. Despite several rounds of talks in previous years, no lasting resolution has emerged. The Trump administration’s latest move appears to be a decisive shift toward imposing a concrete timeline in hopes of accelerating diplomatic progress.

The U.S. has remained a strong supporter of Ukraine throughout the conflict, providing military aid, intelligence, and humanitarian support. At the same time, the administration has emphasized that an indefinite military solution is unsustainable and has urged both sides to re-engage in serious negotiations.

The August 8 deadline reflects an urgency to achieve peace, though it remains unclear whether Moscow or Kyiv will agree to such a timeframe. The Russian government has yet to issue a formal response, while Ukrainian leaders maintain that any peace talks must begin with a full withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied regions.

While the United Nations is not mediating direct talks, it continues to serve as a critical forum for international dialogue on the war. Several UNSC members expressed guarded optimism during Thursday’s meeting, acknowledging that a firm timeline may help break the current diplomatic deadlock.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on developments in both capitals. The United States has made its stance clear: the time for negotiation is now, and results must follow swiftly.
