Security Manager at Wankhede Stadium Arrested for Stealing IPL Jerseys

A security manager employed at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium has been arrested for allegedly stealing official Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 jerseys from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) storeroom. Authorities reported that a total of 261 jerseys were stolen, with an estimated value of ₹6.52 lakh.

According to the Marine Drive Police, the accused, identified as 43-year-old Farooque Aslam Khan, gained unauthorized access to the BCCI merchandise room on June 13. CCTV footage later confirmed that Khan removed a box containing jerseys of all ten IPL teams. The theft went unnoticed for several weeks until BCCI officials conducted an internal audit on July 17 and discovered the missing inventory.

Following a complaint filed by BCCI officials, an investigation was launched, leading to Khan’s arrest. During questioning, he admitted to stealing the jerseys and selling them online. Police revealed that Khan told a buyer based in Haryana that the jerseys were part of a clearance sale due to stadium renovations. Proceeds from the sales were allegedly used to fund Khan’s online gambling habit.

So far, approximately 50 jerseys have been recovered. The police are continuing their investigation to trace the remaining items and identify any accomplices involved in the sale or distribution of the stolen merchandise.

Khan has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code related to theft and criminal breach of trust. He was released on bail but remains under scrutiny as authorities examine his financial records.

The incident has raised concerns over security protocols and inventory control measures at major sports venues. BCCI officials are reportedly reviewing internal policies to prevent similar breaches in the future.
