Priyanka Gandhi Alleges Government Silencing Opposition in Parliament

Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has accused the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government of actively suppressing opposition voices during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, July 24, 2025, Gandhi asserted that the government is not allowing sufficient discussion on critical issues and is even orchestrating disruptions from the treasury benches to avoid scrutiny. These claims follow several days of parliamentary deadlock, primarily over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and other pressing matters.

Gandhi’s criticisms extend to what she described as a pattern of deliberate disruptions. “In the last session, I was surprised, as a new MP, to see that the disruption was actually starting from the treasury benches,” she stated. “I was taken aback that they would deliberately raise a topic to provoke a reaction, leading to chaos and eventually an adjournment of the House.” She added that such adjournments seem to “suit them just fine,” implying a strategy to limit parliamentary debate. The opposition, including the INDIA bloc, has been demanding extensive discussions on various topics, including the Bihar voter verification drive, the Pahalgam terror attack, and Operation Sindoor.

The Monsoon Session has seen repeated adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, with opposition members protesting the ECI’s SIR exercise in Bihar, which they allege is an attempt to disenfranchise voters. Priyanka Gandhi, along with other opposition leaders, has maintained that the government has been unwilling to engage in a proper debate on these issues. On the same day, she joined a protest at Makar Dwar, holding a placard that read “Democracy in Danger,” reflecting the opposition’s strong stance.

As Parliament continues to grapple with these contentions, the allegations of silencing and orchestrated disruptions raise questions about the smooth functioning of democratic institutions. The government has yet to directly address Gandhi’s specific claims of treasury bench-led disruptions, though ruling party members have accused the opposition of causing the disruptions themselves by refusing to allow the houses to function. The coming days of the Monsoon Session will likely see continued friction as the opposition presses for discussions on its chosen issues, and the government seeks to advance its legislative agenda.
