A 28-year-old pregnant woman from Mirzapur died during a caesarean section at an illegal nursing home in the Aurai area of Bhadohi district on Tuesday. The woman, identified as Vidyavati Devi, had been admitted to Gupta Nursing Home in Trilokpur for delivery, where the surgery was reportedly performed by unqualified individuals. The newborn survived and is in stable condition.

According to reports, Vidyavati Devi’s husband said the staff performing the C-section fled the facility immediately after the procedure, leaving the family in shock and panic. The nursing home was operating without registration, and the individuals performing medical procedures did not possess valid medical qualifications.

Chief Medical Officer Santosh Kumar Chak confirmed that Gupta Nursing Home had no legal registration and lacked certified medical personnel. He added that following the incident, a team was dispatched to the location, and the facility was sealed. At least six other pregnant women who were receiving treatment there were moved to a government trauma center for safety.

Local residents, angered by the incident, stormed the nursing home and forcibly evacuated several patients after learning of the woman’s death. District Magistrate Shailesh Kumar sent a team of health and police officials to the spot to control the situation and ensure the safety of the other patients.

An FIR has been filed against the operators of the nursing home, who are currently absconding. Police have launched a search operation to track down those responsible. The authorities have assured the family of a full investigation into the incident.

The tragedy has drawn sharp criticism from health experts and activists, who have long warned about the dangers posed by unlicensed medical facilities in rural areas. They argue that such clinics often operate without any regulatory oversight, putting lives at risk, especially of women and children.

The district administration has announced that it will review the status of all private clinics and nursing homes operating in the region. Residents have been urged to verify the credentials of medical facilities and professionals before seeking treatment.
