PM Modi Denies Trump’s Claim of Mediating India-Pakistan Ceasefire

Prime Minister Narendra Modi firmly dismissed claims by former US President Donald Trump that the United States mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Addressing Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon Session, Modi asserted that no global leader asked India to halt its military operations during the execution of Operation Sindoor.

The operation was launched in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. According to Modi, India’s armed forces retaliated within 22 minutes of the assault. He emphasized that the operation was conducted solely based on India’s strategic interests and was not influenced by any foreign pressure.

Modi stated that on the night of May 9, US Vice President J.D. Vance attempted to reach him multiple times. The Prime Minister, who was then in meetings with military officials, later returned the call. Vance reportedly warned India of a possible attack by Pakistan. Modi responded that if India were attacked, it would respond with even greater force, telling the US that bullets would be answered with cannons.

In a clear rebuttal to Trump’s social media post claiming credit for mediating peace, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified that no phone call took place between Modi and Trump from April 22 to June 17. He emphasized that India’s decisions were independent and firmly rooted in its national interest.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh added that the request to halt operations came not from any foreign leader but from Pakistan itself. He said Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations had reached out to India seeking a cessation of hostilities. Only after India achieved its strategic objectives did it agree to a ceasefire.

Modi also addressed criticism from opposition leaders, particularly Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who raised concerns over Trump’s ceasefire claim. The Prime Minister criticized Indian political figures, saying they seemed more inclined to believe foreign narratives than to support India’s actions.

According to reports, Indian defence forces intercepted and neutralized nearly 1,000 Pakistani drones and missiles during the peak of Operation Sindoor on May 9. Modi lauded the effectiveness of India’s air and missile defence systems, attributing their success to the government’s push for self-reliance in defence under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

The Prime Minister concluded by stating that only three countries supported Pakistan at international forums such as the United Nations, while the rest either supported India or remained neutral. He reiterated that India’s actions were justified, decisive, and respected by the international community.

The opposition, including members of the Congress and Trinamool Congress, raised concerns about the intelligence lapses that allowed terrorists to reach Pahalgam and questioned the timing of the ceasefire announcement, which they said gave Trump political leverage. Nonetheless, the government stood firm in asserting that India’s sovereignty and defence decisions remain uncompromised.
