NIA Arrests Key Accused in Manipur’s Jiribam Murder Case, Second Detention in 48 Hours

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), in collaboration with Assam Police, has arrested another key accused in the Jiribam murder case that shocked Manipur in 2024. Lalrosang Hmar, also known as Rosang, was apprehended in Aizawl and handed over to the NIA for further investigation.

This arrest follows the capture of the prime accused, Thanglienlal Hmar, also known as Boya, who was taken into custody in Assam’s Cachar district just a day earlier. Both suspects are believed to have played central roles in the abduction and killing of six individuals from the Meitei community, including three women and three children.

The victims, aged between 10 months and 60 years, were abducted from their homes in Bokobera, Jiribam, in November 2024. Their bodies were later discovered near the Barak River, bearing signs of brutal violence. The tragedy sparked national outrage and intensified demands for justice from civil society and community leaders.

During Rosang’s arrest, authorities recovered a mobile phone and a SIM card, which are expected to provide critical leads in the ongoing probe. The NIA believes that Rosang was actively involved in both planning and carrying out the attack.

The Manipur High Court has directed the NIA to file a comprehensive report and chargesheet within one month, following a Public Interest Litigation filed in the aftermath of the killings. The court emphasized the need for timely justice and proper legal procedures in handling such a sensitive case.

The recent developments mark a significant step forward in the investigation, which has become one of the most high-profile criminal cases in the state. With both main suspects now in custody, authorities hope to unravel the full scope of the conspiracy and bring all involved parties to justice.
