Nagpur Municipal Corporation to Auction 12 Properties Over Tax Defaults

Download IPFS

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced plans to auction 12 properties located in the Lakadganj zone due to outstanding property tax dues amounting to ₹48.34 lakh. The defaulters include a mix of registered firms and trusts that have failed to clear their tax liabilities despite repeated notices.

Under Section 45 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, 1949, the NMC is authorized to seize and auction properties with unpaid taxes after providing a deadline for payment. The current deadline for settling these dues is set for July 31, 2025. Failure to comply by this date will lead to the initiation of the auction process.

This move shows the municipal body’s efforts to enforce tax compliance and recover revenue critical for funding local infrastructure and public services. The auction will follow legal procedures designed to ensure transparency and fairness.

Authorities emphasize that the auctioned properties will include both commercial and residential assets, with an estimated value reflecting the outstanding tax amounts. The NMC has urged defaulters to take advantage of the deadline to avoid losing their properties.

Municipal officials noted that such enforcement actions are necessary to maintain fiscal discipline and ensure equitable contribution from all property owners. The recovery of these taxes is expected to support ongoing municipal projects and service delivery in the region.

This step aligns with broader efforts by local governments across India to crack down on tax evasion and improve urban governance. The enforcement of property tax payments is vital as municipalities increasingly rely on these funds to meet expanding urban demands.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation continues to monitor tax compliance closely and has indicated plans to intensify similar actions if defaulters persist. This approach reflects a growing trend of stringent enforcement to protect public revenue streams.

Property owners and firms in the affected areas are advised to settle their dues promptly to avoid losing valuable assets. The auction details, including dates and procedures, will be communicated following the July 31 deadline.

The NMC’s firm stance highlights the importance of timely tax payments and serves as a reminder to all stakeholders about the consequences of non-compliance within municipal jurisdictions.
