Man Detained Near International Border in Kathua Over Suspicious Activity

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel detained a man near the International Border (IB) in the Marheen area of Hiranagar, Kathua district, after suspicious phone records revealed multiple communications linked to Pakistan. The arrest took place on August 4 during a routine patrol along the sensitive border zone.

According to security officials, the man was moving in a suspicious manner close to the border when he was stopped for questioning by BSF troops. During a security check, his mobile phone was examined, and records showed several calls traced to Pakistani numbers. The discovery prompted immediate detention and a handover to the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) for further investigation.

Authorities said the case is being treated as a matter of national security, given the sensitive location of the incident and the nature of the phone communications. The SOG is currently analyzing call metadata, stored messages, and other digital evidence to determine whether the communications were related to any unlawful cross-border activities, such as smuggling, espionage, or aiding infiltration attempts.

Officials have so far withheld the identity of the detained person while the investigation is ongoing. They have not confirmed whether the man has any known affiliations with militant organizations or cross-border networks. However, security agencies are on high alert, and increased vigilance is being maintained across border districts in Jammu and Kashmir.

Kathua district, which shares a long stretch of the International Border with Pakistan, has been a focus of intensified security measures in recent months. The BSF conducts frequent patrols and surveillance operations to prevent infiltration, arms smuggling, and other illegal activities. Incidents involving cross-border phone communications are considered serious and are typically investigated for potential threats to security.
