Kolkata Man Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer to Evade Traffic Rules

A 20-year-old man was arrested by the Jadavpur Traffic Guard for impersonating a police officer in order to escape penalties for traffic violations. The accused, identified as Chiranjit Mondal, was caught after allegedly jumping a red light while riding a motorcycle.

According to police officials, Mondal initially claimed to be a constable with the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. When pressed further by traffic personnel, he altered his statement and said he was a civic volunteer. However, he failed to provide any official identification or documents to support either claim.

Investigators stated that Mondal is a repeat offender with a history of traffic violations. This time, in a bid to avoid fines or other legal action, he posed as a law enforcement officer. His conflicting statements and lack of proper identification raised immediate suspicion among traffic officials, who then detained him on the spot.

Following his detention, he was taken to the Jadavpur Police Station, where a formal complaint was lodged. Mondal was booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and impersonation.

Police confirmed that this is the first time he has been arrested for such an offence, though he had been under the radar for multiple traffic-related incidents. Authorities are now verifying whether he has attempted to impersonate law enforcement officers on earlier occasions.

The incident raises concerns about the ease with which individuals can misuse the identity of police personnel to bypass legal norms. Officials have urged the public to report similar suspicious behaviour to help curb such offences.

A detailed investigation is underway to determine if the accused had any accomplices or a prior criminal record.
