India and Israel to Develop Strategic Defense Framework

India and Israel have agreed to establish a structured institutional framework aimed at deepening their long-term defense cooperation. This initiative follows a high-level meeting in New Delhi, reinforcing the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.

During bilateral talks on Wednesday, India’s Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh met with Major General (Retired) Amir Baram, Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Defense. The meeting emphasized the importance of moving beyond individual defense deals and adopting a long-term approach to security collaboration. A statement released by India’s Ministry of Defense noted that both sides “concurred to work towards developing an institutional framework” to enhance mutual defense ties.

The leaders also addressed counter-terrorism efforts. Baram expressed Israel’s support for India’s security concerns and condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In turn, Singh reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism and denounced the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israeli civilians. He also called for the immediate release of hostages taken during that incident.

In addition to reviewing recent progress made since the last Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting held in July 2024, the two nations emphasized continued collaboration in areas such as advanced defense technologies, regional security challenges, and military planning. The Joint Working Group is the primary bilateral mechanism guiding India-Israel defense initiatives.
