Four Prisoners Facing Rape and POCSO Charges Escape from Korba Jail

Four undertrial prisoners accused in rape and POCSO Act cases escaped from Korba district jail on Saturday afternoon, prompting an immediate search operation and internal investigation.

The incident occurred between 3 pm and 4 pm when the inmates reportedly climbed a cowshed wall inside the premises and scaled the 25-foot boundary wall using a rope. CCTV footage captured them jumping over the wall before fleeing.

The escapees have been identified as Dashrath Sidar (19), Chandrashekhar Rathia (20), Raja Kanwar (22), and Sarna Sinku (26). All were awaiting trial in separate cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and related charges of rape.

Jail officials discovered the escape during routine checks and raised an alert. Police teams, along with prison staff, launched a coordinated manhunt across the district. Authorities are also questioning jail personnel to determine possible lapses in security.

District officials confirmed that an internal probe has been initiated to review existing safety measures and identify weaknesses in the prison’s infrastructure. Local residents have been urged to report any information about the fugitives to the police.

Community leaders expressed concern over the breach, calling for stricter monitoring and preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future, especially given the serious nature of the charges against the escaped inmates.

The search operation is ongoing, with police intensifying efforts to track down the prisoners and return them to custody.
