Delhi Embarks on Major Pipeline Overhaul to Combat Water Contamination

In a significant move to address persistent water contamination issues, the Delhi government announced on Friday its plan to replace decades-old water pipelines across the National Capital Territory under a new Water Master Plan. 

Water Minister Parvesh Verma highlighted that many existing pipelines, some dating back 40 to 80 years, are a primary cause of the discolored and foul-smelling water frequently reported by residents. The initiative comes amidst rising public complaints and judicial scrutiny regarding the quality of tap water supplied in various parts of the city.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has already initiated the project, with tenders reportedly issued for replacing 35-year-old pipelines in several East Delhi localities, including Yojna Vihar, Jagriti Enclave, Shanti Mohalla, Jhilmil Industrial Area, Dilshad Garden, Gandhi Nagar, and IP Extension. Corroded and outdated infrastructure has been identified as a key factor in water pollution, leading to concerns about public health. 

Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma affirmed that the budget for the new pipelines has been passed and sanctioned, with tenders approved, and groundwork commencing in some areas. “There are a lot of places in Delhi where people face issues of polluted water. It is because water pipelines are 40 to 80 years old,” Verma stated during a recent constituency visit, assuring residents of tangible progress within a year.

This pipeline overhaul is part of a broader strategy to modernize Delhi’s aging water infrastructure. Officials have been directed to adhere to strict deadlines and ensure transparency throughout the project’s execution. The emphasis on replacing worn-out pipelines aims to improve water quality, mitigate leakages, and enhance water pressure across the capital. The project’s timely and diligent completion is seen as crucial for ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water for all Delhi residents.
