The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested five members of a gang involved in the theft of underground copper cables belonging to major telecom companies. The gang was based in Loni and had allegedly been active across the National Capital Region for over two years.

According to police officials, the gang was caught red-handed on July 28 while illegally excavating underground cables in the CR Park area. The accused were pretending to be telecom contractors and were using a JCB machine and a truck to dig and extract the cables. However, a telecom company official confirmed that no official work was sanctioned in the area, prompting police action.

Officers recovered nearly 1,400 kilograms of stolen copper cables, along with the excavation equipment. The accused were identified as Amit, Sameer, Shakeel, Amzad, and Arif. The investigation revealed that Arif was the main receiver of the stolen property.

Delhi Police said the gang is linked to multiple incidents of similar thefts, mostly targeting telecom infrastructure. The stolen copper cables were sold to scrap dealers for profit, causing significant financial losses to telecom providers and service disruptions.

The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Further investigation is underway to identify other members and connections of the syndicate.
