BJP Youth Worker Among Two Arrested for Assaulting Cattle Transporters in Durgapur

A youth wing worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and another individual have been arrested in Durgapur, West Bengal, for allegedly assaulting Muslim cattle transporters and attempting to take the law into their own hands.

The incident occurred near the Gammon Bridge under the jurisdiction of the Coke Oven Police Station. The two arrested, Parijat Ganguly and Dipak Das, are accused of intercepting a pickup van transporting cattle and leading a group of around 15 others in a violent assault on the vehicle’s occupants.

According to police reports, the group forcibly tied up the transporters, made them perform humiliating physical punishments in public, damaged the vehicle, and allegedly stole cash from the victims. The cattle were being transported from Bankura district for agricultural purposes and all necessary documents were reportedly in order.

Trinamool Congress district president Narendra Nath Chakraborty filed a formal complaint demanding strict action against the attackers. Following the arrests, the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner, Sunil Kumar Chaudhary, stated that the victims had proper documentation for transporting the cattle. He warned that vigilantism would not be tolerated and legal action would be taken against anyone involved, regardless of their political affiliation.

Members of the local minority community gathered at the police station in protest, demanding justice. Police have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining individuals involved in the attack.
