Assam Cybercrime Accused Shariful Islam Arrested in Kolkata After Over 2 Years on the Run

Shariful Islam, a man accused of masterminding a large-scale cyber fraud operation in Assam, has been arrested by Morigaon police in Kolkata after evading authorities for more than two and a half years. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a long-standing investigation into a major cybercrime racket.

According to officials, Shariful had been on the run since a case was registered against him in Assam. He reportedly moved frequently across seven to eight Indian states and even traveled abroad to avoid detection. The Morigaon Crime Branch, which had been tracking his movements, sent a special team to Kolkata. After a week-long surveillance operation, the team successfully located and detained him.

Authorities allege that Shariful was involved in defrauding people of crores of rupees through cyber scams. Using the proceeds of his alleged crimes, he is said to have purchased property in Morigaon town, which has since been seized by officials under applicable legal provisions.

Samiran Baishya, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), confirmed that Shariful was brought back to Morigaon for questioning. Police believe he holds key information about a wider network of cybercriminals and are expected to conduct an in-depth interrogation.

The case has drawn attention to the growing threat of cybercrime in India and the challenges involved in tracking down suspects who operate across multiple jurisdictions. Police have reiterated their commitment to dismantling such networks and bringing the accused to justice.

Shariful’s arrest is expected to aid ongoing investigations and may lead to further arrests in connection with the fraud ring.
