Archaeologists excavating a historic site in Shiloh, located in the modern-day West Bank, have uncovered what they believe could be the remains of the biblical Tabernacle, an ancient and sacred structure said to have housed the Ark of the Covenant. The find has reignited interest in one of the most significant artifacts of Judeo-Christian tradition, which has been lost for nearly 1,500 years.

The discovery centers on a large stone structure dating back to the Iron Age I period. According to researchers, the building’s layout, orientation, and proportions closely match the biblical specifications of the Tabernacle, the portable sanctuary where the Ark of the Covenant was kept during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. In scripture, the Ark held the stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments and was believed to be the earthly dwelling place of God.

Dr. Scott Stripling, the director of excavations at the Shiloh site, detailed the findings: “We’ve uncovered a monumental building from the Iron I period that matches the biblical dimensions of the Tabernacle. The structure is oriented east-west and divided in a 2:1 ratio, just as described in scripture.”

Shiloh holds a key place in the Old Testament as the site where the Tabernacle and the Ark resided for centuries before the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. Archaeological teams have long studied the area in hopes of uncovering physical evidence that aligns with religious texts.

While researchers have not found the Ark itself, the discovery of a structure consistent with biblical descriptions strengthens the historical and cultural significance of the site. Experts note that further excavation and analysis will be required to confirm the building’s exact purpose, but the preliminary findings are promising.

The Shiloh dig is part of an ongoing effort by biblical archaeologists to locate and authenticate sites mentioned in scripture using historical records, geological evidence, and advanced excavation methods.
