Ahmedabad Property Tax Scam Leaves Thousands Facing Inflated Bills

DOWNLOAD IPFS

A major property tax scam has come to light in Ahmedabad, affecting thousands of residents who have received inflated and inaccurate tax bills due to tampering with property valuation records.

According to officials, numerous properties were wrongfully moved into higher tax brackets through the manipulation of data within the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The revised property values in many cases were reportedly 20 to 30 percent higher than actual market rates, triggering an outpouring of complaints from affected homeowners.

Several residents reported receiving backdated tax notices along with penalties, causing unexpected financial strain. These notices, many of which cover multiple financial years, have hit middle-income neighbourhoods the hardest, including localities around Motera, Nikol, and Juhapura.

Preliminary inquiries suggest collusion between municipal staff and local agents, leading to unauthorized changes in property classification and valuation. In response, the state government has launched a formal investigation, directing the Vigilance Department and Municipal Ombudsman to conduct a thorough audit of all valuation changes made since 2024.

Officials confirmed that some employees have already been suspended, and efforts are underway to identify others involved. The AMC has promised corrective measures and assured residents that all incorrect notices will be reviewed. Penalties are expected to be waived for affected citizens who submit appeals within 15 days.

The scam has exposed major flaws in the management of property tax data and the need for greater oversight and transparency in municipal operations. Civic experts and watchdog groups have called for a stronger grievance redressal system, along with the digitisation of property records using verified geospatial data to prevent such incidents in the future.

In the meantime, residents are advised to carefully examine any recent property tax notices and submit formal objections if they find discrepancies. Citizen groups have also demanded the establishment of a dedicated helpline to handle complaints swiftly and fairly.

The investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of administrative reforms expected in the city’s property tax assessment process.
