A tragic incident in Atoicherra Basti, located in Assam’s Cachar district, has left the local community in shock after a one-year-old boy was allegedly killed by his paternal uncle. The accused, identified as Gandhi Rikiason, also known locally as Chuta,n was arrested shortly after the crime. Authorities confirmed that the suspect locked himself inside a room with the child before attacking him with a sharp, sickle-like weapon, ignoring repeated pleas from witnesses to stop.

According to police, the situation unfolded rapidly. Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Ranjit Kumar Paul and Magistrate Deepa Das arrived promptly at the scene, coordinating immediate action that led to the suspect’s apprehension. The body of the child was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Cachar district police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), India’s new penal code framework, and have initiated a forensic examination of the weapon and crime scene. Officials said all necessary evidence will be gathered to ensure a strong court case.

The attack has deeply unsettled residents of the area, particularly within the tea estate communities surrounding Atoicherra Basti. The brutality of the crime has drawn widespread condemnation from locals, who have demanded swift justice for the victim.

In light of heightened tensions, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been deployed to the area to prevent any potential unrest. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course.

Police sources indicate that further statements will be taken from witnesses to build a comprehensive account of events leading up to the killing. Forensic teams are also expected to examine the crime scene thoroughly to corroborate testimonies and physical evidence.

While the motive behind the attack remains under investigation, law enforcement officials stressed that the matter will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law. “This is a highly sensitive case, and we are committed to ensuring justice is delivered,” said a senior police officer.

The incident has reignited discussions on child safety and community vigilance in rural Assam, with local leaders calling for increased social awareness and stronger preventive measures to protect vulnerable children from harm.
