In a significant move coinciding with Kargil Vijay Diwas, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has launched the ‘Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025.’ This new scheme aims to provide comprehensive free legal aid and assistance to the families of soldiers, including those serving in remote and challenging areas, and ex-servicemen, thereby alleviating their domestic legal burdens.

The ‘Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025’ was formally inaugurated on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Srinagar, during a North Zone Regional Conference on “Reaffirming the Constitutional Vision of Justice for Defence Personnel and Tribals.” The launch event, presided over by Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court Judge and Executive Chairman of NALSA, saw the presence of Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The core objective of the scheme is to address the unique challenges faced by military personnel, who, due to their deployment, often cannot attend to personal legal matters such as property disputes, family issues, or service-related entitlements. Under this initiative, NALSA will ensure that these families receive proper legal representation and support across courts nationwide. The scheme extends its benefits not only to the Indian Armed Forces but also to personnel from central paramilitary forces like the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

A key feature of the ‘Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025’ is the establishment of dedicated legal services clinics within Rajya (State) and Zila (District) Sainik Boards across all states and union territories. These clinics will be staffed by trained paralegal volunteers and legal aid counsels, with a preference for engaging retired soldiers and “Veer Naris” (war widows) who have pursued legal education, leveraging their lived experiences to assist military families effectively. The scheme also emphasizes leveraging digital access and online redressal mechanisms, including e-Lok Adalats, to ensure speed and convenience in legal processes.

Justice Surya Kant underscored the judiciary’s commitment to supporting those who protect the nation. “You (soldiers) serve the nation at the borders. We will stand guard at your homes,” he stated at the launch, emphasizing that this initiative is not merely a procedural reform but a transformative step in the welfare spectrum of military personnel.

The launch of the ‘Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025’ marks a significant milestone in ensuring that India’s brave service members and their families receive the justice and legal support they deserve, reinforcing the nation’s gratitude and commitment to their well-being.
