The 2011 Soumya murder case, one of Kerala’s most horrific crimes in recent memory, has resurfaced in the public eye after the convicted rapist and murderer, Govindachamy, attempted to escape from a high-security prison.

Govindachamy, who is serving a life sentence, reportedly tried to flee from Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur earlier this week. Prison authorities confirmed that he was caught before he could exit the prison premises. He has since been placed under tighter security, and an internal investigation has been launched to identify any lapses.

The attempted escape has reignited public memory of the brutal case. On February 1, 2011, Soumya, a 23-year-old woman working at a shopping mall, was assaulted while traveling on a passenger train from Ernakulam to Shoranur. Govindachamy, a habitual offender from Tamil Nadu, attacked her when she was alone in a train compartment. He pushed her out of the moving train near Vallathol Nagar and later raped her after dragging her to a nearby wooded area. Soumya succumbed to her injuries five days later in a hospital.

The case had sparked widespread outrage and debates over women’s safety in public spaces, especially on public transport. It also led to tighter enforcement of security measures in trains across Kerala.

In 2011, a fast-track court convicted Govindachamy and sentenced him to death. However, in 2016, the Supreme Court of India commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment, stating that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the injuries leading to Soumya’s death were caused after the rape. The decision drew sharp criticism from civil society and legal experts alike, and it remains a point of contention in discussions on justice for victims of sexual violence.

The recent escape attempt has raised questions about prison surveillance and the adequacy of supervision for high-risk inmates. Activists and politicians have called for a thorough audit of prison protocols and accountability for any negligence that may have enabled the incident.

Kerala’s prison department has assured that Govindachamy remains in custody and faces further disciplinary action for the escape bid. Meanwhile, Soumya’s family has expressed anguish over the incident, saying it has reopened deep wounds and reignited the trauma they have tried to move past.
