Tamil Nadu Woman Sentenced to Life for Killing Her Two Children to Start New Life With Lover

A sessions court in Kanchipuram has sentenced a 32-year-old woman and her partner to life imprisonment for the murder of her two young children in 2018. The court ruled that Abirami, along with her then-lover Meenatchisundaram, carried out the premeditated killings to remove obstacles in their plan to start a new life together.

According to the prosecution, Abirami gave her children sleeping pills mixed in milk while they were staying at their home in Kundrathur. Her four-year-old daughter Karnika died from the dose, while her six-year-old son Ajay initially survived. He was later smothered to death the next morning. Investigators revealed that the motive behind the crime was to eliminate the children, whom Abirami saw as impediments to her relationship with Meenatchisundaram. Her husband, a bank employee, was away at work during the incident.

The court sentenced both accused to three consecutive life terms under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. It also imposed a fine of ₹15,000 each. Failure to pay the fine will lead to an additional three-year sentence. The judge rejected the appeal for leniency, citing the deliberate and inhumane nature of the crime.
