Harivansh Narayan Singh Meets President Murmu Following Dhankhar’s Resignation

In a key development following the sudden resignation of Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh met with President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday. The meeting comes amid political ripples in the Parliament, as Harivansh temporarily assumes responsibilities as acting chairman of the Upper House.

President Murmu confirmed the meeting through an official statement, stating that Harivansh called on her at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The meeting underscores the swift procedural response following Dhankhar’s resignation, which was accepted earlier in the day by the President through a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Harivansh, a senior parliamentarian from Bihar, chaired the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session, ensuring that parliamentary business continued without disruption. Despite calls for adjournment and demands for debate on issues such as Operation Sindoor and alleged voter irregularities in Bihar, Harivansh maintained order and oversaw the discussion of scheduled legislative matters.

Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, citing personal and constitutional reasons, and his departure has triggered the process of electing a new Vice President. As per Article 91 of the Constitution, the Deputy Chairman steps in as acting chairman of the Rajya Sabha until a new Vice President is elected.

The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for the Vice Presidential election soon. In the meantime, Harivansh will preside over Rajya Sabha proceedings and lead the Business Advisory Committee meetings that chart the legislative course for the ongoing session.
