Three Kanwariyas Arrested for Assaulting Youth in Zirakpur

Three Kanwariyas were arrested on Tuesday after allegedly assaulting a young man on the busy Chandigarh–Ambala highway near Zirakpur. The incident occurred when the youth’s motorcycle reportedly brushed past the group of pilgrims, leading to a violent altercation.

The victim, identified as Ramandeep Singh from Nagla village, was en route to Aero City in Mohali when his vehicle came in close contact with the Kanwariyas walking along the road. Despite reportedly apologizing, he was attacked by several individuals from the group. Witnesses said he was beaten with sticks and fists, sustaining a head injury that required six stitches.

Local residents intervened and managed to stop the assault. They detained three individuals and handed them over to the Zirakpur police. Ramandeep was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Zirakpur Assistant Sub-Inspector Raj Kumar confirmed the arrests. “We received a complaint around 10 a.m. and acted swiftly. The three accused were taken into custody, but later both parties agreed to a settlement, and the accused were released,” he said.

The incident has sparked concerns about public safety during the Kanwar Yatra, with increasing calls for better crowd management and stricter law enforcement along pilgrimage routes. An investigation is ongoing to determine whether others were involved in the assault.
