President Murmu Accepts Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation as Vice President

President Droupadi Murmu has officially accepted the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down from office citing health concerns. The development marks a rare mid-term exit from the second-highest constitutional post in the country.

Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday under Article 67(a) of the Constitution. The Ministry of Home Affairs promptly issued a notification confirming the acceptance, and the Rajya Sabha Secretariat also acknowledged the vacancy. Dhankhar began his term in August 2022 and was due to serve until 2027. His resignation makes him the third Vice President in India’s history to resign before completing a full term.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes for Dhankhar’s recovery and acknowledged his long-standing service in various constitutional and administrative roles. However, the resignation has stirred political speculation. Senior opposition figures have questioned the timing and motives behind the move, suggesting it may be linked to recent tensions surrounding parliamentary proceedings.

Sources indicate that Dhankhar’s acceptance of an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, without consultation with the executive, may have contributed to the strain. This motion, brought by a section of opposition leaders, reportedly caused friction between the Vice President’s office and the central leadership.

Dhankhar’s letter to the President expressed gratitude and emphasized his need to focus on health, following medical advice. His resignation followed a sudden meeting with President Murmu on Monday morning.

The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for electing a new Vice President in due course. Until then, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh will preside over the Upper House’s sessions.

Dhankhar’s exit has added an unexpected dimension to the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, which was already marked by heightened political tensions and legislative activity.
