CRPF Jawan Assaulted by Kanwariyas at Uttar Pradesh Railway Station, 7 Arrested

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was violently assaulted by a group of Kanwariyas at the Mirzapur railway station on Friday following an altercation over a ticket purchase. The shocking incident was captured on CCTV and has since sparked widespread outrage.

The victim, identified as Gautam, was on leave and traveling with his young son to resume duty in Manipur when the dispute occurred at the ticket counter of the Brahmaputra Express. According to officials, an argument broke out between Gautam and the saffron-clad pilgrims regarding who would buy tickets first. The situation escalated, resulting in the group attacking the jawan.

CCTV footage revealed the Kanwariyas punching and kicking the CRPF jawan repeatedly as onlookers watched. One bystander eventually intervened and helped the victim escape the assault. The video quickly circulated on social media, drawing condemnation from various quarters.

Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) officers responded swiftly and arrested seven people, including four minors. An FIR was filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Railway Act.

“The CRPF jawan was attacked without provocation. We have taken swift action and arrested the individuals involved. Further investigation is underway,” said a GRP official at the station.

The Kanwariyas involved were reportedly en route to Baidyanath Dham in Jharkhand as part of the annual Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage. The event, which sees thousands of devotees carrying holy Ganga water to Shiva temples, has seen several reports of disorder and law violations this year.

The incident has renewed calls for stricter oversight during religious pilgrimages and stronger protections for security personnel. Authorities have urged pilgrims to maintain discipline and respect public spaces and services.

After receiving medical attention and giving his statement, Gautam and his son continued their journey.
