In a major development aimed at easing the city’s notorious traffic congestion, the central government and the Delhi government have jointly approved nine significant infrastructure projects worth ₹24,000 crore (approximately 2.87 billion USD). This comprehensive plan, greenlit on Saturday, July 19, 2025, seeks to revolutionize urban mobility by constructing new roads, tunnels, and flyovers and extending existing metro lines, promising reduced travel times and a healthier urban environment for millions of commuters in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

The approved projects are a crucial response to Delhi’s ever-growing traffic woes, which contribute significantly to air pollution and productivity loss. Officials have confirmed that all projects are slated for completion by 2027, with construction commencing in phases this year. The financial burden for this massive undertaking will be shared between the central and Delhi governments, underscoring a collaborative effort to tackle a long-standing challenge.

A cornerstone of this initiative is the 12.3-kilometer extension of the Pink Line Metro from Majlis Park to Maujpur. This final stretch will complete the circular Pink Line, establishing a full metro ring road that will allow passengers to traverse Delhi without the need for transfers or venturing onto congested surface roads. Additionally, South Delhi is set to benefit from a new elevated corridor connecting AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) to the Mahipalpur Bypass, a strategic move to ease the frequently sluggish commute towards Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

Further enhancing connectivity, a 5-kilometer tunnel from Shiv Murti to Vasant Kunj has been approved. This tunnel will link National Highway 48 (NH-48) with Mahipalpur and Vasant Kunj, aiming to drastically reduce congestion in one of the city’s biggest bottlenecks. Outer Delhi is also earmarked for substantial upgrades, including new flyovers and underpasses along Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Gurugram-Jaipur Highway to streamline heavy vehicle movement and improve connectivity to rapidly expanding residential and industrial zones like Rohini, Narela, and Bawana.

Officials emphasized that this initiative represents a “complete reworking of how people move across Delhi,” rather than mere “patchwork fixes.” The successful implementation of these projects promises to fundamentally transform commuting in the city by 2027, offering much-needed relief to daily travelers and contributing to a more efficient and livable capital.
