Dog Owner Shoots Man in Ghaziabad After Argument Over Unleashed Pet, Say Police

A routine dispute over a dog unleashed in a village in Ghaziabad turned violent on Tuesday evening when a pet owner shot the man who confronted him, the police report says.

According to Loni Assistant Commissioner of Police Siddhartha Gautam, the victim, 38-year-old Praveen Kumar, objected to 38-year-old Arvind Bansal walking his dog without a leash. The conversation escalated, and Bansal left the scene. He returned shortly afterward with a firearm and fired at Kumar, striking him in the left lower leg.

Kumar was promptly transported to a local hospital, where he received treatment for a bullet wound located below the knee. As of Thursday, he remains in stable condition, police confirmed.

Authorities have registered a criminal case against Bansal under relevant sections of negligent driving and causing grievous harm, and they are probing whether he held a legally valid firearm license. The weapon used was recovered by police, and statements have been collected from the victim and eyewitnesses.

ACP Gautam commented that the incident began over a relatively minor conflict but escalated sharply due to the presence of a firearm. Police are now considering whether better local regulations regarding pet control—such as mandatory leashing in public areas—might help prevent similar episodes.

Local police officials plan to launch an awareness campaign promoting responsible pet ownership in the village and neighboring areas. They will also evaluate how existing rules on pets and public safety can be better enforced.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are reviewing forensic evidence and legal documents related to the shooting and intend to determine next steps once their review is complete.
