Mumbai Banker Arrested for Filing False Rape Complaint, Extorting Ex‑Partner for ₹1 Crore

A female banker in Mumbai has been arrested for allegedly framing her ex-boyfriend in a false rape case and attempting to extort ₹1 crore from him. The woman, who works at a private bank, was taken into custody by Charkop police after it was revealed that her complaint was fabricated and part of a scheme to blackmail her former partner.

According to police, the woman filed a rape complaint in November 2023, accusing her former boyfriend, an IT professional, of sexually assaulting her after promising marriage. The man was arrested based on her allegations and spent time in jail. During his incarceration, the woman, through her brother, allegedly demanded ₹1 crore in exchange for providing a no-objection letter to withdraw the case.

After the man was granted bail in December 2023, the woman continued to pressure him for money. When he refused to pay, the woman reportedly reduced her demand to ₹50 lakh. Investigators also found that she had accessed the victim’s data, including email accounts, banking information, and real-time location, which she allegedly used to intimidate and harass him further.

The case came under deeper scrutiny following the victim’s complaint, prompting the magistrate to direct police to file a first information report (FIR). The FIR names the woman along with her brother, a friend, and several bank employees who are believed to have aided her in accessing the victim’s confidential information.

Police have booked the woman under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act for criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, extortion, and cyber offenses. She has been remanded to police custody for eight days as the investigation proceeds.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the misuse of criminal laws and highlights the potential damage caused by false allegations. Authorities continue to gather evidence and pursue all individuals involved in the conspiracy.
