Kanpur Teen Found Dead, Family Alleges Police Negligence

The body of 18‑year‑old Sumit Gautam, missing for three days, was discovered in muddy water near Rawatpur in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. According to police sources, the victim’s head bore severe injuries, and parts of the flesh appeared to be missing. The grim discovery has sparked allegations of police inaction, as the victim’s family claims their initial attempts to file a missing person report were ignored by the local station.

Relatives of Gautam told reporters that when they first approached the police to report him missing, officers failed to take immediate action. They alleged that this delay hindered search efforts and may have allowed those responsible to destroy evidence. The family has accused the police of gross negligence and failing in their duty to respond promptly to a suspected disappearance.

Following the discovery of the body, the Kanpur police detained three individuals, including relatives of the victim’s alleged girlfriend. Investigators believe the killing may have been premeditated and are examining possible motives linked to personal disputes. The suspects are currently being questioned, and police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder and destruction of evidence.

Senior police officials have assured that the investigation will be thorough and impartial. Forensic teams have been deployed to collect physical evidence from the scene, and the body has been sent for a post‑mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas in an attempt to track the victim’s last movements before he went missing.

The alleged police inaction has drawn criticism from residents and community leaders, who have demanded accountability from the officers on duty at the time the missing person report was first sought. Several have called for departmental action against those who failed to act promptly, stressing that delays in missing person cases can significantly reduce the chances of recovery and justice.

Legal experts note that, under existing guidelines, police are required to register missing person complaints promptly and initiate an investigation immediately, particularly in cases involving young individuals. Any failure to comply with these procedures can constitute negligence and, in certain circumstances, be grounds for disciplinary or legal action against the responsible officers.

The incident has reignited concerns about policing standards in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in handling missing persons and suspected foul play cases. Rights advocates have called for an independent inquiry into both the murder and the alleged lapses by law enforcement, arguing that such measures are essential to maintain public trust and ensure justice for victims and their families.

As the investigation continues, the family of Sumit Gautam has vowed to pursue legal action against the police officers they believe failed in their duties. The outcome of both the murder case and the inquiry into the alleged police negligence will be closely watched in Kanpur and beyond, given the broader implications for accountability in law enforcement practices.
