Tamil Nadu Man Kills Three Daughters, Dies by Suicide Over Debt Crisis

In Veppagoundanputhur village, a 36-year-old man allegedly beheaded his three young daughters before taking his own life. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday and is believed to have been driven by severe financial distress.

The deceased has been identified as Mathaiyan, a daily wage labourer who lived with his wife and children. According to police sources, Mathaiyan first ensured his wife was not at home by sending her to a relative’s house. He then reportedly used a sickle to behead his three daughters, aged 10, 7, and 6, while they were asleep inside the house. Following the brutal murders, he is said to have ended his life by slitting his own throat.

Mathaiyan’s wife returned home around 3 am and discovered the gruesome scene. She immediately raised an alarm, and neighbours contacted the police. Law enforcement officials and forensic teams reached the spot and began their investigation. The bodies of the three girls and Mathaiyan were sent to the government hospital for postmortem examination.

According to the police, Mathaiyan had been under immense stress due to financial troubles. He had taken loans from multiple sources and was struggling to repay them. Villagers told investigators that he had become withdrawn in recent weeks and seemed to be mentally disturbed. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the debt burden had pushed him to take the extreme step.

Officers from the Paramathi Velur police station have registered a case of murder and unnatural death. They are also investigating the sources of his loans and whether he had been harassed by lenders. Police are speaking to family members and neighbours to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy.

Authorities are considering whether financial counselling and mental health support services can be made more accessible in the region to prevent similar incidents in the future. Social workers and district administration officials visited the village and extended support to the grieving family.
