A 19‑year‑old Dalit woman was allegedly gang‑raped by five men in a forested area near Churhat in Sidhi district, Madhya Pradesh. Police said the incident took place when the survivor and a male companion were traveling together and were reportedly confronted by the accused. The companion was beaten unconscious, after which the perpetrators allegedly assaulted the young woman.

The survivor managed to reach the authorities and report the crime, following which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that three suspects have been detained in connection with the case, while a manhunt is underway for the remaining two accused.

According to Sidhi district police, medical examinations have been conducted, and the survivor has been provided with immediate medical care and counseling support. Senior police officers have visited the crime scene and met with the survivor to assure her of a swift investigation and justice. Authorities have also deployed search teams in nearby villages and forest areas to apprehend the absconding suspects.

The district administration has emphasized that the case will be pursued with zero tolerance for crimes against women, particularly those targeting marginalized communities. Officials have highlighted that offences committed against members of Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes carry enhanced legal penalties under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Residents have expressed shock and outrage over the incident, calling for stricter enforcement of laws to deter sexual violence and caste‑based crimes. Several women’s rights activists have urged authorities to ensure that the investigation is conducted without delay and that the survivor and her family receive adequate protection from potential intimidation or harassment.

Reports indicate that the assault has brought renewed attention to the issue of women’s safety in rural and remote regions, where inadequate lighting, sparse police presence, and difficult terrain often hinder rapid law enforcement response. The forested area where the incident occurred is known for limited accessibility, which may have been exploited by the accused to carry out the crime.

The Madhya Pradesh Police have stated that forensic evidence from the scene is being collected and analyzed to strengthen the prosecution’s case. Statements from witnesses, including the survivor’s companion who is recovering from his injuries, will form a critical part of the investigation. Authorities are also exploring whether the accused had prior criminal records or if the attack was premeditated.

State‑level law enforcement agencies are monitoring the case, with regular progress updates expected from the Sidhi police. The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable communities and ensuring that perpetrators of such crimes face the full consequences under the law. The case remains under active investigation, and further developments are anticipated in the coming days.
