Amit Shah Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Union Home Minister

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has officially become the longest-serving Home Minister in India’s history, having completed 2,258 consecutive days in office as of August 5. He has now surpassed the previous records held by senior leaders L.K. Advani and Govind Ballabh Pant.

Shah assumed office on May 30, 2019, and served continuously until June 9, 2024, in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second term. He was reappointed on June 10, 2024, in the third consecutive Modi-led government and continues in the role.

The milestone was acknowledged by Prime Minister Modi, who commended Shah’s contributions to India’s internal security and praised his long-standing commitment to national service. Modi stated that this achievement is “just the beginning,” signaling further expectations from the veteran leader.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also congratulated Shah, calling him a modern-day Chanakya and praising his leadership in handling internal security matters, particularly in the northeastern region. Singh credited Shah with helping advance peace processes and combat drug trafficking.

During his tenure, Shah has overseen several significant policy decisions and reforms. Among the most notable is the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which removed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. He also played a key role in the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

With 2,258 days in office, Amit Shah has now exceeded L.K. Advani’s 2,256-day record and Govind Ballabh Pant’s tenure of over six years. His extended leadership is viewed as a period of continuity and decisive governance in one of the country’s most critical cabinet positions.
