Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra met with U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard on Sunday for what was described as an “engaging conversation” on a variety of mutual interests. The meeting, which took place in Washington, D.C., highlights the ongoing diplomatic dialogue between the two nations, particularly at a time of shifting geopolitical landscapes.

Ambassador Kwatra shared details of the meeting in a post on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “Pleasure to meet DNI Tulsi Gabbard and her husband, Abraham Williams; we had an engaging conversation on various issues of mutual interest.” The specifics of the discussion were not publicly disclosed. However, the meeting comes amidst several developments impacting U.S.-India relations, including new U.S. tariffs on Indian goods and India’s continued engagement with Russia on energy and military equipment.

Gabbard, a former congresswoman who now serves as Director of National Intelligence, has a notable history of supporting a strong relationship with India. She is the first Hindu to hold a top intelligence position in the U.S. government and has previously met with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Her background and public statements have often emphasized the importance of a strategic partnership between the two countries.

The meeting also took place as India’s diplomatic mission in the U.S. is expanding its consular services. The Indian Embassy recently announced the opening of eight new Indian Consular Application Centers (ICACs) across the United States. This expansion, aimed at better serving the Indian-American community, is a testament to the strong people-to-people ties that form a crucial component of the bilateral relationship. According to Ambassador Kwatra, “We firmly believe that people-to-people ties are the heart of the India-US partnership.” The new centers will handle services such as visa and passport applications, Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) services, and more, making these essential functions more accessible.
