NHRC Hosts Rights Hearing in Hyderabad to Address 109 Cases

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) conducted a two-day “Open Hearing and Camp Sitting” in Hyderabad on July 28–29, 2025, addressing 109 cases of alleged human rights violations from Telangana. The initiative aimed to ensure accountability among state agencies and provide a direct platform for citizens to present grievances.

Held at the MCR Human Resource Development Institute in Jubilee Hills, the hearings were led by NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian, along with Commission Members Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani. Victims and complainants had the opportunity to present their cases directly to the Commission, in the presence of relevant state officials.

The cases covered a broad range of issues, including police misconduct, irregularities in the prison system, delays in welfare entitlements, and rights violations affecting Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Concerns related to maternal health, student welfare in government schools, and human trafficking were also raised.

Senior NHRC officials, Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal, Director General (Investigation) Shri R. P. Meena, and Registrar (Law) Shri Joginder Singh, attended the sessions to oversee proceedings and ensure follow-up action.

On the second day, the Commission met with senior officials from the Telangana government to review the status of earlier recommendations and to encourage quicker resolution of outstanding complaints. Discussions also focused on sensitizing the administration to human rights obligations.

The NHRC then held consultations with civil society groups, NGOs, and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) to gather input on grassroots-level issues that may not appear in official records. A media briefing concluded the event, summarizing key findings and actions taken.

Since 2007, the NHRC has held similar sittings across various Indian states, including Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, as part of its decentralization strategy to make human rights enforcement more accessible.

The Hyderabad camp hearing reflects the Commission’s continued effort to close gaps in justice delivery and ensure state accountability in safeguarding constitutional rights.
