Kerala’s state-owned Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme for teachers in Lakshadweep. The initiative, which began this week, aims to equip educators with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in AI, ensuring they can integrate these emerging technologies into classroom teaching.

The month-long training will involve 110 teachers from various schools across the Lakshadweep islands. They will be trained in five separate batches, with each batch receiving dedicated sessions on AI fundamentals, practical applications, and interactive projects. According to KITE, the training aligns with Kerala’s broader digital education mission, which focuses on equipping teachers with advanced technological capabilities to support modern learning environments.

The AI module has been designed to cover topics such as prompt engineering, AI-assisted teaching tools, image and text generation, and ethical considerations in AI use. Participants will also learn to create AI-based teaching materials tailored to different subjects, enabling them to deliver more engaging lessons. KITE officials emphasised that the programme will be a blend of classroom-based instruction and hands-on activities, allowing teachers to test tools and techniques directly during the sessions.

In addition to the AI programme, KITE has announced plans to introduce robotics training for teachers in Lakshadweep later this year. This follow-up initiative will build on the skills acquired in the AI module, providing educators with further exposure to technology-driven teaching methods.

The training is part of Kerala’s ongoing efforts to share its digital education expertise with other regions in India. KITE has already implemented similar AI training in Kerala schools as part of the state’s curriculum enhancement strategy. By extending this to Lakshadweep, the organisation aims to create a network of tech-savvy educators capable of adapting to evolving educational demands.

Speaking about the initiative, a KITE representative highlighted its potential to transform classroom practices in the island territory. By training teachers in AI, we are enabling them to prepare students for the realities of a technology-driven world, the official said. Our goal is to ensure educators have both the knowledge and the tools to make learning more interactive and relevant.

The programme is being conducted in collaboration with the Lakshadweep education department, which has expressed strong support for integrating advanced technology into its teaching practices. The move reflects a growing recognition of the role AI can play in improving education quality and accessibility in remote regions.

Through this training, KITE hopes to inspire a new wave of innovation in Lakshadweep’s classrooms, ensuring both teachers and students are prepared to navigate the opportunities and challenges of the digital age.
