Indigenous ‘Suppressors’ Supplied to Indian Army, A Boost for ‘Make in India’

In a major step toward self-reliance in defense technology, SSS Defence, a Bengaluru-based company, has become the first Indian firm to supply indigenously manufactured suppressors for the Sako TRG-42 sniper rifles to the Indian Army. This move marks a significant shift from the previous reliance on foreign-made accessories and reinforces the country’s commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The Sako TRG-42 is a high-precision bolt-action sniper rifle used by the Indian Army for its long-range accuracy and effectiveness.

Suppressors, also known as silencers or sound moderators, are crucial components for modern sniper operations. They work by reducing the sound signature of a gunshot, which makes it more difficult for adversaries to detect the sniper’s location. This enhances operational stealth and provides a tactical advantage in the field. Additionally, suppressors help in controlling muzzle flash and reducing recoil, which can improve the sniper’s ability to maintain accuracy and situational awareness after a shot.

Until now, the Indian Army’s procurement of these critical firearm accessories has relied on imports. The successful indigenous development and supply of these suppressors by SSS Defence not only reduces this dependency but also ensures a quicker turnaround for maintenance and customization. The company’s manufacturing complex in Jigani, near Bangalore, is an 80,000-square-foot facility dedicated to producing arms and components for both domestic and export markets.

SSS Defence, which started as a manufacturer of automotive components, has rapidly expanded its capabilities in the defense sector. The company has also developed its own sniper rifles, the Viper and the Saber, which are intended for use by Indian special forces. This comprehensive approach, which includes weapons, ammunition, optics, and accessories, sets SSS Defence apart from many other suppliers who only provide parts of a system. The company has previously secured several contracts, including an export order for .338 Lapua Magnum sniper rifles and ammunition supply deals. The supply of these indigenous suppressors to the Indian Army highlights the growing capability of India’s private defense sector and is a key step in modernizing the country’s armed forces with domestically sourced components.
