The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple rainfall alerts for July 26 across parts of Maharashtra, as heavy monsoon activity is expected to impact the Konkan coast and hilly interiors. Red and orange alerts have been declared for several districts, urging residents and local authorities to prepare for potential flooding and travel disruptions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country’s national weather forecasting agency, announced on Friday that parts of Maharashtra, particularly the coastal Konkan region and the hilly (‘ghat’) areas of Pune, Satara, and Nashik, could experience heavy to hefty rainfall. A red alert has been issued for Palghar district and the ghat areas of Pune, indicating the potential for torrential rainfall at isolated locations. Meanwhile, an orange alert, which signifies heavy to very heavy rain, was declared for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg in the Konkan belt, as well as for the elevated zones of Nashik and Satara.

According to the IMD’s bulletin, areas under red alert can expect “heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy downpours in isolated spots.” Those under orange alert should anticipate “heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places,” which may still cause local flooding and transport interruptions, particularly in low-lying or hilly areas.

The agency’s alert comes as monsoon patterns intensify across the western region of India, with moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea contributing to the developing weather systems. This seasonal activity, though typical for late July, is notable for its concentrated impact on both coastal and mountainous zones.

While no significant damage has yet been reported, local administrations in the affected districts have been advised to remain on high alert. Emergency services, disaster response units, and civic bodies have been instructed to monitor the situation closely and coordinate public safety measures, including traffic redirection and temporary school closures where necessary.

The IMD has urged residents in red alert zones to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in the ghat areas where landslides and waterlogging are common hazards during intense rainfall events. Fishermen have also been warned to stay away from rough seas.

With the southwest monsoon in full force, more rain is expected in the coming days, and updates will continue to be issued as the situation evolves.
