A condolence meeting was held at the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters in Gomtinagar Extension, Lucknow, on Monday to honour former Director General of Police (DGP) KL Gupta (Indian Police Service – IPS, 1965 batch), who passed away on July 23, 2025. Senior officers, including current DGP Rajeev Krishna, paid floral tributes to the late officer and observed a moment of silence in his memory.

Born on October 10, 1941, in the Banda district, Gupta joined the IPS in 1965 and went on to serve in several key positions during his 36-year career. He held important roles such as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varanasi, Inspector General (IG) of Allahabad Zone, and Additional Director General (ADG) Security. He later served as DGP of Uttar Pradesh, as well as heading the Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID), Railways, and Prosecution wings.

One of his most notable contributions came in 1998 when, during his tenure as DGP, he oversaw the formation of the Special Task Force (STF). This elite unit became instrumental in combating organised crime in the state, including the elimination of the notorious gangster Shri Prakash Shukla.

Gupta’s decades of service were marked by professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to law enforcement. His exemplary record earned him the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1982 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. Colleagues and former associates remember him as a disciplined officer, a strategic thinker, and a leader who left a lasting impact on policing in Uttar Pradesh.

The gathering at the police headquarters reflected the respect he commanded across ranks, with officers recalling his efforts to modernise the force and his focus on decisive action against criminal elements. His legacy, particularly the establishment of the STF, continues to influence law enforcement strategies in the state.

Gupta’s passing marks the loss of a dedicated public servant whose career was defined by a steadfast commitment to maintaining law and order. His contributions will be remembered as an important chapter in the history of policing in Uttar Pradesh.
