The Indian National Congress convened a national conclave on Saturday to deliberate on what it views as pressing constitutional challenges facing the country and to outline potential strategies in response. The event, organized by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Department of Law, Human Rights, and Right to Information (RTI), brought together party leaders, legal experts, and activists under the theme “Constitutional Challenges: Perspectives and Pathways.”

Addressing the media on Friday, AICC law, human rights, and RTI chairman Abhishek Manu Singhvi described the conclave as taking place a inghvi described the event as occurring at what he called “a pivotal moment in our Republic’s journey to the foundational values of our democracy.” Singhvi emphasized the importance of reaffirming faith in the constitutional order, upholding the rule of law, and safeguarding the integrity of institutions.

The conclave featured addresses from key Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Senior party figures such as general secretaries K. C. Venugopal, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, and Mukul Wasnik; treasurer Ajay Maken; chief ministers of Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh, as well as former chief ministers, participated in the discussions. In total, 41 speakers were scheduled, including former judges, legal scholars, and human rights advocates.

According to the party, the full-day program was designed to serve as a platform for legal professionals, public thinkers, and citizens to exchange perspectives on safeguarding constitutional governance. The discussions are expected to cover topics such as judicial independence, federalism, minority rights, and institutional accountability.

Congress leaders have alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has undermined constitutional principles, a charge the BJP has consistently denied. The conclave was framed as a broad-based dialogue rather than a purely partisan exercise. Singhvi noted that the event aimed to generate constructive proposals for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring adherence to constitutional mandates. The meeting underscores Congress’s ongoing focus on constitutional and governance issues as part of its political positioning, particularly in the context of recent debates over legislative and institutional reforms. Outcomes from the conclave are likely to inform the party’s policy agenda and legal strategies in the months ahead.
