The BrahMos missile served as the “primary offensive weapon” during Operation Sindoor, the retaliatory military strikes against Pakistan in May, according to Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Speaking to reporters in Pune, Kamat highlighted the critical role of India’s indigenous defense technology, stating the operation was a declaration of the country’s self-reliance and technological strength.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in response to a terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, which killed 26 tourists. During the brief, four-day conflict, the Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure and military targets in Pakistan. Kamat revealed that the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, launched from Sukhoi Mk 1 aircraft, was the main weapon used to deliver these strikes.

The DRDO chief also praised the Akashteer air defense system, an indigenous and automated network that he said formed the backbone of India’s defensive capabilities. He explained that Akashteer integrates all sensors, allowing for the quick identification of incoming threats and the deployment of appropriate weapons to neutralize them. The Akash short-range surface-to-air missiles and the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) were also utilized.

Kamat emphasized that the success of Operation Sindoor has significantly boosted confidence in India’s defense manufacturing capabilities. He noted that the operation’s success has sparked increased interest from foreign buyers for various Indian-made weapon systems, including the BrahMos, Pinaka, and Akash. He expressed confidence that India’s defense exports, which reached a record ₹23,622 crore in the last fiscal year, could double in the next two to three years.

Kamat’s statements follow the Indian Air Force (IAF) chief’s recent confirmation that India had shot down six Pakistani aircraft during the same operation. The DRDO chief’s comments show the synergy between India’s air power and its indigenous weapon systems, showcasing a coordinated and technologically advanced military response.
