Maj Gen Ajay Sood Retires After 37 Years of Service in the Indian Army

Major General Ajay Sood, a native of Thural village near Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, has retired from the Indian Army after an illustrious 37-year career. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1988, Maj Gen Sood’s service is being celebrated across his hometown and state for bringing distinction to the region and reinforcing Palampur’s reputation as the “Land of Warriors.”

The son of schoolteachers Kuldip Sood and Sartanjla Sood, Maj Gen Sood is an alumnus of Sainik School, Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur district. He completed his military training at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun before being commissioned into the Army. Over nearly four decades, he rose to one of the senior-most ranks in the armed forces, earning recognition for his professionalism, leadership, and dedication.

Residents, former colleagues, and family members have extended heartfelt congratulations, commending his decorated service record. Palampur MLA Ashish Butail praised Maj Gen Sood for bringing honor not just to his village but to the entire state. “Ajay Sood, a resident of a small village, Thural, has brought distinction not only to Palampur but to the entire state by rising to a top post in the Indian Army,” Butail said, adding that his career serves as an inspiration to the youth of Himachal Pradesh.

Throughout his tenure, Maj Gen Sood was awarded multiple medals in recognition of his exemplary service and commitment to the nation. His career adds to Palampur’s proud military heritage, which includes renowned soldiers such as Captain Vikram Batra, Param Vir Chakra (PVC) awardee; Major Sudhir Walia, Ashok Chakra recipient; and Captain Saurabh Kalia.

As Maj Gen Sood steps into retirement, his journey from a small village in Himachal Pradesh to the upper echelons of the Indian Army stands as a testament to discipline, perseverance, and service to the nation. His achievements continue to inspire future generations in the state and across the country to pursue careers in the armed forces with dedication and honor.
