Accountability Demanded Against Dairy Owners for Illegally Dumping Cow Dung on Buddha Dariya

Authorities in Ludhiana are intensifying action against local dairy units for polluting the Buddha Dariya (also known as Buddha Nullah), a key tributary of the Sutlej River, by illegally dumping cow dung and untreated waste.

According to a recent inspection by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), 44 dairies in the Tajpur Road area were found violating environmental regulations. The PPCB has issued show-cause notices to these facilities and has directed the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation to take immediate steps to prevent further pollution of the waterway.

Buddha Dariya has long suffered from industrial and domestic pollution. The PPCB has now specifically identified improper waste disposal by dairy farms as a major contributing factor to the water body’s deterioration. Officials stated that cow dung is being openly dumped on vacant plots and roadsides, eventually washing into nearby drains that lead directly into the Dariya.

Environmental authorities have warned that repeated violations could lead to closure notices for the offending dairies. As part of the cleanup efforts, PPCB officials have directed civic authorities to remove dumped waste and prevent further illegal discharge.

The action forms part of broader efforts to rejuvenate Buddha Dariya, which has become severely polluted over the years. Officials stress that coordinated enforcement between municipal bodies and environmental agencies is critical to restoring the health of the waterway and protecting the region’s ecological balance.
