Government Urges Broader Embrace of Hindi as Official Language

The Indian government is actively promoting the wider adoption and use of Hindi, its official language, across all levels of public administration and daily life. The push emphasizes the cultural, historical, and constitutional significance of Hindi, encouraging citizens and government bodies to use it with pride.

According to the Constitution of India, Hindi in Devanagari script is designated as the official language of the Union, alongside English, which continues to be used for official purposes. The government’s renewed emphasis on Hindi seeks to progressively increase its utility and presence in official communication, aiming for greater transparency and improved outreach to the general public. This is seen as a move towards mirroring developed nations where government functions predominantly in native languages.

Government departments are receiving directives to celebrate “Hindi Diwas” (Hindi Day) with enthusiasm, promoting the language through various activities and ensuring its increased use in official tasks. This includes using simple, colloquial Hindi in internal notes, correspondence, press releases, and emails to establish stronger connections with the public. The Department of Official Language, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has long been tasked with implementing the Official Language Policy, and this current drive reinforces those efforts.

The promotion of Hindi is rooted in its historical role as a unifying medium during India’s freedom struggle and its position as the most widely spoken language across the country. Advocates suggest that a stronger embrace of Hindi can deepen cultural ties, enhance national identity, and streamline administrative processes. Furthermore, it is argued that proficiency in Hindi can open up professional opportunities within India’s growing economy and aid in cultural exchange.

While the government encourages the spread of Hindi, constitutional provisions also safeguard regional languages, and the promotion is not intended to impose Hindi where other languages are prevalent.
