Modi Becomes India’s Second-Longest Serving PM in Succession

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a landmark in Indian political history by becoming the second-longest-serving prime minister in uninterrupted consecutive terms. This milestone places him ahead of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and underscores his continuing influence on India’s political and economic trajectory.

Modi has now completed 4,078 consecutive days in office, surpassing Indira Gandhi’s tenure of 4,077 days served between 1966 and 1977. Only Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, served a total of 5,783 days in office from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964. Modi first assumed the role on May 26, 2014, and was sworn in for a rare third term in June 2024 after securing enough seats through his alliance, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

This milestone is not only a testament to Modi’s electoral appeal but also a reflection of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) deep-rooted presence across India’s political landscape. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a clear majority in both the 2014 and 2019 general elections, with 272 and 303 seats respectively, marking a break from the coalition era. In 2024, while the BJP secured 240 seats short of a majority, its alliance partners in the NDA ensured Modi’s third consecutive term as Prime Minister.

Before leading the country, Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for over 12 years from October 2001 to May 2014, making him the longest-serving in the state’s history. His administrative record in Gujarat was often marked by economic growth and infrastructure expansion, factors that played a significant role in his ascent to national leadership.

BJP leaders have been vocal in recognising this achievement. Dr. Nikhil Anand, General Secretary of the BJP Other Backwards Classes (OBC) Morcha, remarked, “Prime Minister Modi holds the distinction of being the longest-serving elected leader at both the state and central levels in India. He also highlighted Modi’s unmatched electoral success, having led the party to six straight victories, three at the state level (2002, 2007, 2012) and three nationally (2014, 2019, 2024).

Modi is widely known for his work-driven leadership style. Party officials often cite his consistent public engagement and refusal to take personal time off, even during personal loss. Notably, he is known to have never taken a single day off throughout his tenure, even working on the day of his mother’s passing. His discipline and commitment remain integral to his public image, with his annual fasts during Navratri (a Hindu religious festival) and attention to grassroots development initiatives reinforcing his connection with the common citizen.

Guided by the slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas”, which translates to Together with all, Development for all, Trust of all, Effort by all, Modi’s leadership continues to shape India’s global standing and domestic priorities.

As India moves forward, this milestone not only marks longevity in office but also signals continuity, strategic vision, and strong leadership qualities that have resonated with large sections of the electorate and contributed to political stability in uncertain global times.
