In a tragic incident, a 5-year-old girl drowned in a local pond in South Tripura’s Srikanta Bari ADC village on Monday. The victim, identified as Alina Tripura, lost her life after heavy rainfall in the region caused water levels to rise across several water bodies.

According to officials from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), torrential rains over the past few days had led to flooding in the Muhuri, Feni, and Lawgang rivers. The rising water levels also submerged nearby ponds, turning them into hidden dangers for children in the area.

Residents discovered Alina’s lifeless body in the flooded pond and promptly recovered it, but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

In response to the tragedy, the state government immediately provided the girl’s family with ₹5,000 in interim relief, as part of its disaster aid protocol. Authorities are now assessing the situation to determine whether additional compensation is warranted.

“This is a devastating loss, and our hearts go out to the family,” said a senior SEOC official. “We are working to evaluate the situation and consider enhanced safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”

After several days of continuous rain, water levels in the affected rivers have started to recede. SEOC reports indicate that the government has not deemed it necessary to open any relief camps at this time.

However, this drowning incident follows four similar cases reported earlier this month in West Tripura and Unakoti districts. Just two weeks ago, heavy monsoon rains led to the evacuation of over 800 residents to relief camps in South Tripura.

Experts emphasize the need for increased safety measures, such as fencing or warning signals around flooded ponds and rivers, to protect children during the monsoon season. Authorities are considering plans to enhance safety protocols along flood-prone areas and encourage parents to closely supervise their children.

With next week’s weather forecast showing intermittent heavy showers, state emergency teams remain on high alert to address any further challenges posed by the ongoing monsoon.
