The Indian Army has announced it will fully sponsor the education of Svarn Singh, a 10-year-old boy from Punjab who displayed remarkable courage by providing meals and refreshments to troops during “Operation Sindoor” in May 2025. This gesture, revealed by the Western Command in mid-July 2025, highlights the deep bond between the armed forces and the civilian populace, recognizing the “quiet heroes” who support the nation’s defenders.

Svarn Singh, a Class 4 student from Tara Wali village in Ferozepur district, located near the India-Pakistan border, voluntarily undertook the daily task of supplying water, milk, lassi, tea, and ice to soldiers deployed on his family’s farmland. This act of kindness occurred amidst the intense military confrontation with Pakistan in May, a period triggered by a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and subsequent cross-border hostilities. Undeterred by the scorching heat and the tense atmosphere, Svarn’s consistent support offered much-needed comfort to the troops.

Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Manoj Kumar Katiyar, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, felicitated Svarn Singh in a ceremony held in Ferozepur Cantonment. Lt Gen Katiyar emphasized that this initiative shows the Indian Army’s commitment not only to safeguarding borders but also to nurturing the nation’s future generations. The Army’s Golden Arrow Division will cover all aspects of Svarn’s schooling, from admission to academic needs, ensuring he has the resources to excel in his educational journey.

Svarn’s actions did not go unnoticed during the intense period of Operation Sindoor. On May 25, Major General Ranjit Singh Manral, General Officer Commanding of the 7th Infantry Division, had already honored Svarn Singh as the “Youngest Civil Warrior,” presenting him with a memento, a special meal, and his favorite treat: ice cream. At the time, Svarn expressed his aspiration to join the armed forces. “I wasn’t scared. I want to be a soldier when I grow up,” he stated, reflecting his sense of patriotism even at a young age.
